Good 28 track exploration of southern soul man Roscoe Shelton’s Sound Stage 7 work from the early to mid 60s. Often overlooked Shelton possessed a powerful bluesy voice that worked well with the material he fronted. ‘My Best Friend’ has that classic early soul sound – still drenched in R&B but softening out a bit – ‘Love Comes And Go’ is a lovely bit of sundown soul, ‘Soon As Darkness Falls’ is a juggernaut dancer, ‘A Man’s Love’ has that country-soul vibe while ‘I’m In Way Too Deep’ and ‘Running For My Life’ are both punchy 60s movers. ‘I Can’t Stand To Be Without You’ shows another side of Shelton’s work with a slight gospel edge, while the galloping groove of ‘You Ought To Take Time Out For Your Love’ is classic big city soul.
