24 track investigation into the formative years of the growth of Soul in Detroit, focussing on the period between ’61 and ’64. Motown had been scoring hits from 1959 and native labels were keen to join in, often trying to emulate the sound of the Motor City giant. Highlights on this set include ‘I’m A Lonely Guy’ from Timmy Shaw & The Sternphones, Marva Josie’s ‘You Lied’, The Falcon’s ‘Oh Baby’, James Lately’s stunning ‘Tears Running And Falling From My Eyes’, Melvin Davis’ ‘Wedding Bells’ and Vivian Collins’ ‘Answer Me’.
