Black Light Collective, based in Detroit, Michigan, is the brainchild of Producer/Saxophonist Dave McMurray. Rayse Biggs, trumpeter and McMurray’s fellow Was (Not Was) alumni Luis Resto feature on keyboards as well as percussionist Larry Fratangelo, known for his work on all of the Parliament/Funkadelic classics. Trombonist Kenneth Gill and trumpeter Allen Dennard are also present along with talented vocalist Isis Damil on this powerhouse of an album. The funky, bouncy ‘Black Light’ a tour de force while the multi-paced ‘Freedom Dauy’ harks back to Strata East/Black Jazz at its best. The more sedate ‘Everything Old Is New’ majors on Maurice O’Neill’s delicate piano work, the throwback ‘Freedom For Sale’ is a joy, the jazz funk of ‘Love Survival’ nails the pure late 70s homage while the upbeat ‘Detroit Urban Radio’ has a nostalgic feel. The gentle ‘In My World’ and ’11 2 Minute Prayer closes out this exceptional album. Brilliant.
