As a group that includes eight sons of Jazz legend Phillip Cohran, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble were schooled at an early age by their father and that legacy is repaid in this quiet, meditative album that has a bare, sparse spirituality at its heart. Cohran passed away in June 2017 and in that context the music here takes on added weight. With no drummer the feel is different to previous albums: ‘Now’ is probably the most rhythmic track on the album with the minimal ‘Morning Prayer’ and the creeping tone of ‘Purple Afternoon’ being at opposite ends of the spectrum. ‘Midnight’ has an almost 70s mystery TV theme about it while ‘Sri Neroti’ is lifted by a wiry synth line. Very slow paced and contemplative.
