‘Born To Be Blue’ was recorded on 1st March 1962 but did not get released until 1985. Grant Green used his core quartet of pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes on the session but with the addition of Ike Quebec on tenor saxophone. ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’ from the Disney movie Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is a compelling Jazz groove – propelled by some serious drum work. The title song is a slow ballad and Quebec’s solo is so blue and dark, but beautiful too. The version of the film tune ‘If I Had You’ is a finger popping affair with Green, the tenor of Quebec and Clark’s Bop style piano all on point. The uplifting ‘Back In My Own Backyard’ flows effortlessly. The ballad ‘My One And Only Love’ is a gentle tune, but the bluesy approaches of Quebec and Green suit its melody perfectly. Green’s ‘Outer Space’, the only original composition, is a very strong Boppish tune. High quality Grant Green, high quality Blue Note.
