If big band albums were all as good as ‘Bringin It’, they would not be such an acquired taste. Few bass players reach the heights of Christian McBride, however, whose playing is as tasteful as ever. ‘Bringin It’ covers a multitude of styles that reflects McBride’s eclectic musical tastes. ‘Getting To It’ touches a funkier side of things, whilst the cover of Freddie Hubbard’s ‘Thermo’ is delightfully straight-ahead. ‘Youthful Bliss’, ‘Full House’ and ‘Optimism’ swing joyously. McCoy Tyner’s ‘Sahara’ is Free Jazz. Melissa Walker adds her stylish vocal to ‘Mr Bojangles’ and the stand out ‘Upside Down’, the latter of which is a track Carmen Lundy would proud. High quality, five-star stuff.
