Japanese female vocalist Kimiko Kasai recorded ‘Butterfly’ in a Tokyo studio with Herbie Hancock’s band in 1979, whilst it was touring in Japan. The album consists primarily of Herbie Hancock tunes like the excellent version of ‘I Thought It Was You’, ‘Tell Me A Bedtime Story’, a jazzy take on ‘Maiden Voyage’ and the wonderful ‘Butterfly’. There is also a fine interpretation of Stevie’s ‘As’. Herbie is outstanding on electric piano and the band featuring the likes of Paul Jackson, Alphonse Mouzon, Bill Summers, Bennie Maupin and Webster Lewis are as superb as you would expect.
