Wes Montgomery’s ‘California Dreaming’ was a huge hit Jazz album when it was released in 1966.  Released on Verve and produced by Creed Taylor, it was a precursor for the ‘CTI sound’ that the producer championed on his own label – covers of popular songs given lush big band style arrangements.  Montgomery’s own ‘Mr Walker’ is the perfect illustration of that sound The Mamas And The Papas’ ‘California Dreaming’ is a standout, as is Bobby Hebb’s ‘Sunny’.  For those who enjoy George Benson’s CTI albums ‘California Dreaming may well be up your street.  Montgomery’s playing is a joy.
