Twenty-two track focus on a nine year period of independent creativity from The Golden State, ‘California Funk’ includes a breadth of classics and obscurities: the Entertainers IV is a big sounding funker and an early Richard Fields effort, Brenda George’s ‘What You See is What Your Gonna Get’ is a nailed on classic while Union’s Brent Wood penned ‘Strike’ features Gail Anderson on vocals and is a ‘rare funk classic’. Chucky Thurmon’s stripped back 1975 disco effort ‘Thank You For The Party’ is a more obscure offering, The Ballads’ ‘Butterfly’ has gained attention in recent times while Warm excursion’s stomping organ heavy ‘Hang Up’ is an old favourite for funk fans. The Soul Sensations’ tender ‘When I Had You, Baby’ is a mellow delight while Rulie Garcia’s ‘Earthquake’ is a Latin tinged funk instrumental no doubt inspired by the region’s tendency to tremors. Good collection.
