Chet Baker is best remembered for his ballads, but this 1962 Rome recording shows he can groove with the best. The band consists of musicians from various W European countries. There is a rousing rendition of Monk’s ‘Well You Needn’t’ and an 8-minute take on Charlie Parker’s ‘Barbados’. Oscar Pettiford’s ‘Blues In The Closet’ is another barnstorming tune. There are a couple of trademark instrumental slowies ‘Over The Rainbow’ and ‘These Foolish Things’. The playing from the band is exceptional and has that slightly looser European feel. The outstanding guitarist Rene Thomas sounds not unlike Kenny Burrell. Quality.
