Dexter Gordon’s ‘Clubhouse’ is a Blue Note album that did not earn release until 1979, fourteen years after its recording (27th May 1965). This band cooks and features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet. The rhythm section includes drummer Billy Higgins, pianist Barry Harris and primarily bassist Bob Cranshaw though Ben Tucker is on one tune. Gordon’s own ‘Hanky Panky’ starts proceedings. It is a slowish blues that is invigorated by a bristling trumpet solo from Hubbard. The Frank Sinatra co-written ‘I’m A Fool To Want You’ smoulders due to the sensitive playing of Gordon. Ben Tucker’s ‘Devilette’ is a thumping tune led by Tucker’s heavy bass line. ‘Lady Iris B’ is a ballad that is delivered with the customary Gordon dexterity and sensitivity. ‘Jodi’ composed by Gordon is bright, brash and bold. Gordon’s playing is muscular as is Hubbard’s, which is going some.
