Jazz-fusion legends Yellow Jackets return for their third album on the Mack Avenue imprint and deliver a superb set that takes in the weaving experimentalism of Coltrane, the funky edge of Eddie Harris, the fusion of Weather Report and many stops in between. The opener ‘Golden State’ is an irresistible footapper, head nodder and finger clicker, ‘Guarded Optimism’ has a hard bop feel while ‘Inevitable Outcome’ is early 80’s fusion meets modern sensibilities rolled into one. ‘Eddie’s In The House’ is tough, stomping ode to Harris while ‘Fran’s Scene’ is a pacey, playful delight. Fantastic, faultless set that showcase not only the playing but also writing abilities of these stalwarts.
