‘Concierto’ is an undiscovered gem in the CTI catalogue. Hall’s playing verges on the divine especially on his fast version of Cole Porter’s ‘You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To’. ‘The Answer Is Yes’ swings gently. ‘Concierto De Aranjuez’, introduced into Jazz by Miles on ‘Sketches Of Spain’ is no less wonderful. Solo support is provided Chet Baker’s warm trumpet and alto master Paul Desmond. Ron Carter’s bass holds it together. ‘Big Blues’ marries Hall’s eloquent guitar and Art Farmer’s soft flugelhorn superbly. ‘Studio Trieste’, from 1982, is a collaboration between Hall, Chet Baker and flautist Hubert Laws. A Spanish/ Cuban feel pervades the wonderful quasi-classical ‘Malaguena’. The tribute to ‘Django’ is a mournful yet engaging mid-tempo piece. The version of ‘Swan Lake’ is mind-blowingly beautiful with all three mastering this classic. Miles’ ‘All Blues’ is another fine performance. Essential.
