Sam Rivers’ ‘Contours’ is the free Jazz saxophonists’ second album. It dates from 1965 and features such luminaries as Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter then from Miles Davis’ second great quintet plus Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and drummer Joe Chambers. It is a challenging set, but more ‘together’ than much of the avant-garde from that period. There is a post-Bop swing to ‘Dance Of The Tripedal’ propelled by Chambers’ incisive kit work and Hancock expressive piano. ‘Point Of Many Returns’ and the fluctuating ‘Mellifluous Cacophony’ are explorative numbers that stretch out yet remain coherent. ‘Contours’ might just be one of the more accessible routes into the freer end of the Jazz spectrum.
