A new name to us and another in the ever expanding court of strong new funk/soul acts emerging from Australia. Melbourne’s Emma Donovan & The Putbacks have produced a gritty, at times dark album with Donovan’s powerful, gravely tones gracing a well produced set that straddles the past and the present perfectly. ‘Black Woman’ and ‘Voodoo’ are hard hitting lyrically, the stunning, deep soul of ‘Come Back To Me’ wouldn’t have sounded out of place in early 1970s Memphis, while ‘Keep Me In Your Reach’ is less heavy message-wise and has a decent dance groove. The title track ‘Dawn’ is a beautifully rounded, warm groove: real easy, early morning soul, while ‘My Goodness’ has a quirky rhythm that quickly becomes an infectious head nodder. If you bought the recent Chelsea Wilson album or anything by fellow Aussies Kylie Auldist or The Bamboos you’ll enjoy this.
