Fourteen years after her breakthrough Nora Jones delivers a wonderfully stripped back jazz album in ‘Day Breaks’ that still draws on diverse influences from folk to country but remains unmistakably a contemporary jazz set albeit with twists. The brooding, smoky ‘Burn’ is an engaging opener that draws you into its narrative, ‘Sleeping Wild’ has a creeping groove playing upright bass and piano against each other while Jones’ controlled, breathy vocals effortlessly glide over the top while the bittersweet ‘Tragedy’ and ‘Don’t Be Denied’ show Nora’s love of Americana. ‘It’s A Wonderful Time For Love’ and ‘Peace’ plant us at a table at a Jazz Supper Club, while the delicate ‘Fluerette Africane’ is largely instrumental and is a great ender to what is an engrossing album.
