Lisa Stansfield returns four years after her last album to deliver ‘Deeper’ co-produced by husband Ian Devaney and Snowboy. The opener ‘Everything’ is a confident, brightly produced dancer with an infectious melody, the searching, jazzy opening of ‘Twisted’ gives way to a stomping, emphatic soul number, the mellow, classic Brit-soul sounding ‘Coming Up For Air’ is a good ballad while the boogie laced ‘Never Ever’ is a slick, modern soul gem. ‘Hercules’ starts with the band reaching around for the groove before the track explodes into life, then ebbs back while the ttile track ‘Deeper’ is classic Lisa Stansfield: sophisticated, soulful and sultry – perhaps the standout track on the album. The funked up ‘Butterflies’ is a real vintage throwback while her cover of Family Stand’s ‘Ghetto Heaven’ is a good way to close out this strong set.
