Multi-talented Aaron Abernathy returns with a punchy, lyrically hard hitting album in the form of ‘Dialogue’ and as the title suggests, this set is all about the conversation – the one Abernathy is having with both himself and us – about black people’s position in the economic, segregation, and racial politics of the current times. ‘Children Of The City’ has an unrelenting, rolling groove that underscores the vocals that stylistically compare to D’Angelo, ‘Restrictions’ continues in a similar vein while the poetic ‘Generation’ is a strong message song built around a looped melody with layered vocal samples and spoken word. ‘Am I Good Enough To Leave’ perhaps has the most Stevie Wonder influence of them all and is an emphatic, soaring, heavily percussive feel, ‘Human Actions Matter’ is a more sedate number (something of a calm in the storm) while the brooding ‘Now A Days’ and ‘Forecast’ form a two part suite that eases back with less upfront intensity than the previous cuts but are engaging nonetheless. The percussion and beat heavy ‘The Villain In Me’ closes out this tour de force of an album in uncompromising style. Superb, thought provoking stuff.
