David Janeway ft Marcus Belgrave and Bob Berg

David Janeway’s 1986 independent Detroit release Entry Point is a bold offering of fusion jazz, flitting between Latin, modal and spiritual themes. Featuring desirable cameos from the likes of Bob Berg, Steve Berrios and Marcus Belgrave, the album comprises 7 tracks, 6 of which are original Janeway compositions.

After having an initial view to reissue the record, we contacted David a few weeks ago to propose this to him. He responded fairly quickly and mentioned that he still had original sealed copies of the record in question, which currently goes for around 90-100 pounds in private jazz collectors circles, an incredibly rare record which discogs hasn’t caught onto yet. We have exclusively imported these records for the first time to the UK, and are the only shop to have copies. They are all in mint condition and sealed in their original shrink wrap.

Set highlights include the jazz dance number Entry Point, featuring the blazing Bob Berg on tenor sax, showcasing his raw intensity and superior dexterity as a player. The track is a 9-minute-long suite, filled to the brim with powerful electric keys and gravelly tenor playing from the incomparable Berg. The track flits between swinging sections, complex changes (in a reminiscent manner to Giant Steps) and straighter, harder and rhythmically visceral Latin sections, providing montuno patterns that lock in with the laser sharp rhythm section to deeply percussive and effortlessly rhythmical effects. A wonderful track, and a seriously rare and under wraps nugget of jazz dance.
