This Brilliant Herbie Hancock album from 1969, his first for Warner Brothers after leaving Blue Note, is one of many highlight albums of the keyboardist illustrious career. The superb ‘Oh Oh Here he comes’ (shades of later JB’s instrumentals) and ‘Fat Albert Rotunda’ were written for a TV show. The cast of players includes the mighty Joe Henderson, Buster Williams, Tootie Heath, Garnett Brown and Johnny Coles topped by Herbie’ incredible keyboard wizzardry. ‘Wiggle Waggle’ is a funky opener which has been sampled many times. ‘Fat Mama’ is more like a Soul instrumental than a jazz workout, whilst the beautiful ‘Tell me a bedtime story’ (later covered by Quincy Jones) is serene and almost cinematic. Great album.
