‘Free As the Wind’ was the first Crusaders album without Wayne Henderson also represented their first use of orchestrations. It finds Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper and Joe Sample in fine form and Larry Carlton and Pops Popswell add rhythmic spice. The title song, the haunting ‘It Happens Everyday’ (sampled by Vivian Green) and the funky ‘I Felt The Love’ are highlights on one of the finest Jazz Funk albums of 1977. This album has never received the accolades that its quality warrants. At this time the Crusaders had no peers. Superlative.
