1972 album by Gil Scott-Heron “Free Will” was his last for the Flying Dutchman label and includes the stellar, anti-war commentary “Did You Hear What They Said” nestled within an album half comprised of a mix of that warm, laid back jazz ala “The Middle Of Your Day” the bluesy “The Get Out Of The Ghetto Blues” and the pacey title track “Free Will” while the second half is dedicated to Gil’s spoken word poetry rapped against a stripped back percussion soundtrack: at times angry, at others humorous and at others critical but always deeply engrossing. Great record. CD contains 11 includes 11 alternate takes, taken from the original session tapes, providing a fascinating glimpse into the recording process
