One time Was (Not Was) vocalist Sweet Pea Atkinson releases a somewhat belated follow up to his 1982 album ‘Don’t Walk Away’ and time has been kind to his voice – his gruff, lived-in baritone works perfectly with the blues-soul material on offer here. ‘Slow Down’ is a superb southern style mid tempo, he covers Bobby Bland’s classic ‘Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City’ with gusto while Womack’s ‘You’re Welcome Stop On By’ is handled with class. The country-soul ballad ‘Just Another Lonely Night’ allows the power of Atkinson’s voice to shine through while the band funk out on the cover of ‘You Can Have Watergate’: Mindy Abair excels here. The funky southern ‘Just Looking’ is the highlight of the uptempo numbers while the ‘Last Two Dollars’ is classic bluesy soul done so well.
