Trumpetter Roy Hargrove recorded this amazing Latin Jazz album ‘Grand Terre’ in Guadalupe in 1998 (a year after his critically acclaimed ‘Habana’ set) but it has remained unreleased until now. It features a great line up including Willie Jones on drums, Larry Willis on keys and Jacques Schwatrz-Bart on sax amongst many others. ‘Rhumba Roy’ is excellent, taken at a break neck pace, featuring many fine solos as it speeds to a climax in just under 7 minutes. Cedar Walton’s ‘Afreaka’ is another full on shifter with a compulsive groove. ‘Priorities’ and ‘Lake Danse’ are equally good, not quite as frantic but steady, fast latin grooves. ‘Kamala’s Dance’ and ‘A Song For Audrey’ are more mid-tempo tracks but they still have that edge. The playing throughout the album is superb. This is a major find, certainly one of Hargrove’s finest albums yet hidden from us in the vaults for nearly 30 years, what were they thinking. Credit to Verve for finally releasing it.
