‘Grant’s First Stand’ was his first solo release for Blue Note in 1961. It is an organ trio date with Baby Face Willette on Hammond and drummer Ben Dixon. The album hits a killer groove with the guitarist’s own ‘Miss Ann’s Tempo’. The cool take of Bernice Petkere and Joe Young’s ‘Lullaby Of The Leaves’ is a delightful slow burner that ebbs and flows in lyrical mode. Green testifies righteously on the R&B tinged ‘Blues For Willaren’ with its Jimmy Smith like vibe. Green’s final solo is infectious. Willette’s ‘Baby’s Minor Lope’ is another Hammond gem that grooves relentlessly. The standard ‘T’ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do’ and Green’s own ‘A Wee Bit O Green’ ends this fine organ set on a bluesy note. ‘Grants First Stand’ is an outstanding debut release.
