Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt has made a very original album, celebrating the Importance of the passing down of Black history, experiences, trials and tribulations through the spoken word ‘Griot : This is important’. Larry Willis, Harold Mabern, Warren Smith and Ambrose Akinmusire are amongst the musicians whose stories are recorded here, and Pelt has written music to reflect their words. On ‘Carry Christ wherever you are’ Pelt and Chein Chein Lu on vibes push each other forward as the track evolves after a quiet start. Chein Lu leads ‘Don’t dog the source’ which has a walking bass line. Brandee Younger plays harp on the modal jazz ‘Beautiful (F*cking)lie’. ‘Solidarity’ is a lovely shuffling groove, ‘Revelance’ has more urgency on which Pelt blows hard and interchanges with Lu’s vibes. Victor Gould on piano, Vicente Archer on bass, Allan Mednard on drums and Ismel
Wignall on percussion make up the rest of the band on this interesting album.
