Smooth Jazz guitarist Norman Brown has released a succession of fine groove-based albums for over more than 25 years and ‘Heart To Heart’ joyfully continues that sequence. His playing style is heavily influenced by Guitar Benson and Wes Montgomery. Indeed, the latter is the inspiration for the album’s laid-back opening track ‘Heading Wes’. ‘Just Groovin’, ‘Unconditional’ and ‘I Miss Your Groove’ emphasize the funky (in a smooth sense) sound that Brown personifies. There are some nice mellower moments like ‘She’s Mine’ and ‘Heart To Heart’. Guests include Peter White and Jeff Lorber. This instrumental album finds Brown at the top of his game on one of the strongest Smooth Jazz albums of 2020.
