‘I Don’t Care Who Knows’ is compiled from five dates recorded in 1968, 1969 and 1970. As such it does not necessarily have the coherence of an album that was recorded in one or two studio sessions. It does have, however, more than enough musical highlights. Pearson’s adoption of the electric piano gives the album the feeling that it is bridging different Jazz eras. The title cut is a bluesy version of the Buddy Johnson song and Andy Bey sings his heart out with his unique vocal inflection he possessed. ‘Bloos’ is a Hard Bop groove that is propelled by its own intrinsic momentum. A definite highlight. The laid-back ‘A Beautiful Friendship’ is an easy-going piece that flows effortlessly with Pearson’s acoustic piano as lyrical as ever. Tenor saxophonist Frank Foster wrote ‘Horn In’ and plays on this track (and many others). It is proto Jazz Funk (the style did not yet exist as a genre), and there is more than a hint of Herbie Hancock a la Fat Albert Rotunda to it. There is an ‘other worldly’ quality to ‘Canto Ossanha’. The latter part of this double album has a distinct Brazilian flavour. Airto wrote and guests on his classic ‘Xibaba’ and on ‘I Don’t Know’. Antonio Carlos Jobim’s ‘Once I Loved’ is a gentle Samba. Of the Latin tracks, the strongest is the breezy take on ‘Upa, Neguinho’ that stars Flora Purim on vocals. The second Jobim tune ‘Captain Bacardi’ is an uplifting Latin Jazz groove with a lush percussive backdrop. The ‘Theme From Rosemary’s Baby’ is a very introspective but lovely conclusion to what is a set of late 60’s Jazz and Latin Jazz.
