John Coltrane’s drummer Elvin Jones released these two albums, ‘Illumination’ and ‘Dear John C’ in 1963 and 1965. ‘Half And Half’ is a modal classic (from ‘Illumination’), but do not pass on ‘Getting On Way’ and ‘Aborigine Dance In Scotland’ – an interesting combination. ‘Dear John C’ is obviously a reference to ‘Trane’, but is Coltrane-esque in a mellow frame of mind. The Broadway musical song ‘Feeling Good’, the beautiful ‘Ballade’ and ‘Anthropology’ are prime examples.
