The album’s two lengthy tracks ‘India’ and ‘Impressions’ were recorded live at the Village Vanguard on 3rd November 1961. The date features what was to become known as the classic John Coltrane Quartet plus reedman Eric Dolphy and on ‘India’ a second bassist in Reggie Workman. ‘India’ is a fine tribute to that country’s musical influence on Trane. The classic ‘Impressions’ in its full 15-minute glory is a masterpiece and remains amongst the most powerful Jazz compositions both in this incarnation and on the subsequent cover versions it inspired. The album is augmented by two short studio tracks – ‘Up Gainst The Wall’ and ‘After the Rain’ from a session that saw Roy Haynes replace regular drummer Elvin Jones. On ‘After The Rain’, Trane shows his gentle side (a la the legendary ‘Ballads’ album); this piece is simply stunning. Coltrane is in form throughout ably assisted by regular sidemen -pianist McCoy Tyner and bassist Jimmy Garrison plus the aforementioned Haynes.
