Hubert Laws’ brilliant ‘In The Beginning’ is regarded as one of his and CTI’s finest albums. This double album traverses Jazz, Funk and Classical. The stellar band features drummer Steve Gadd, bassist Ron Carter, Bob James on keys and brother Ronnie on tenor sax. There are some fine Jazz workouts such as the versions of Sonny Rollins’ ‘Airegin’ and Coltrane’s ‘Moment’s Notice’. Laws’ own ‘Mean Lene’ is a superb Latin tinged Jazz Fusion number, and Clare Fischer’s ‘In The Beginning’ is yet another wonderful long number. George Benson’s performance at Carnegie Hall in 1974 illustrates why he was considered the greatest Jazz guitarist at that time. His version of Brubeck’s ‘Take Five’ shows awesome technique. ‘Gone’ and ‘Octane’ fine lengthy jazzy pieces, whilst ‘Summertime’ was a rare vocal outing at that time. Hubert Laws guests.
