Rodney Franklin was considered something of a Jazz Funk protégé by his label Columbia when he signed in the late 70’s. This double CD includes his first four albums and arguably his best work. ‘In The Center’ is a consistently high quality set including his first versions of ‘On The Path’ and one of his strongest cuts ‘I Like The Music Make It Hot’ that features Freddie Hubbard on flugelhorn. ‘You’ll Never Know’ includes his hit ‘The Groove’ that started its own dance craze on the London Jazz Funk scene. ‘Felix Leo’ is a subtle mid-tempo groove, where as ‘God Bless The Blues’ allows the pianist to display his Jazz chops. His third set, the self titled album revisits ‘I Like The Music Make It Hot’, a different but equally strong take than the earlier version. ‘Windy City’ has a clopped rhythm and is reminiscent of Ramsey Lewis’ late 70’s Fusion and ‘On The Path’ and ‘In The Center’ are more than solid Jazz Funk grooves. ‘Theme For Jackie’ has an Earth Wind and Fire mellow vibe. ‘Endless Flight’ has a more Latin feel with the exuberant title song being one of his strongest outings. ‘Vibrations’ is another Latin tinged piece, where as the R&B orientated ‘Dance Tonight’ gives a nod towards his future direction.
