‘Indestructible’ is from two 1964 recording sessions on 24th April and 15th May. The line-up is the same for both: Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone) plus a rhythm section of Cedar Walton (piano), Reggie Workman (bass) and Blakey. ‘Indestructible’ kicks off with ‘The Egyptian’ by Curtis Fuller. This awesome slice of Hard Bop sees Blakey smashing the drums all over the place. Fuller opens with a slightly restrained solo that is overshadowed by Wayne Shorter’s tenor, in part inspired by the percussive storm behind. Lee Morgan blows as only he can upon his recent return to the Jazz Messengers. ‘The Egyptian’ is classic Jazz Messengers. ‘Sortie’ follows, and its brashness is evidenced by Morgan’s solo. Morgan composed the driving ‘Calling Miss Khadija’ another Hard Bop killer. It is another masterly performance by the entire band. ‘Mr Jin (the only track from 24th April)’ is another vibrant piece with composer Shorter’s playing having a Coltrane feel. ‘Indestructible’ was the last album Art Blakey recorded for Blue Note, it is more than fitting epitaph to that musical marriage. Classic Blakey!
