Vocalist Alicia Olatuja’s fourth album, ‘Intuition: Songs from the Minds of Women’ is an album of songs by women composers that have rarely found their way to jazz singers. Producer Kamau Kenyatta (who has worked extensively with Gregory Porter) steers the project while the line-up includes Ulysses Owens Jr., Olatuja, pianist Sullivan Fortner, and bassist Ben Williams, with tenor saxophonist Dayna Stephens and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt contributing most of the horn work. Sade’s ‘No Ordinary Love’ is given a moody reworking, ‘People Make The World Go Round’ is given a muscular workout while Joni Mitchell’s heartbreaking ‘Cherokee Louise’ is delivered with a sorrow filled tension that is hard to ignore. The breadth of the catalogue that she mines is vast: Imogen Heap’s ‘Hide And Seek’ is yet again interpreted with intelligence with a light bossa driving it along while ‘Under The Moon’ is a superbly open jazz workout that has the a real sense of a live, in the moment performance. Brilliant stuff: incredible vocals and an undeniable cast of players.
