Produced by Nat Adderley Jr, ‘Invitation’ sees Nicolas Bearde tackle a raft of jazz vocal classics backed by a various group of saxophonists, bassists, drummers and pianists including Adderley Jr himself. The tone is very much set by Bearde’s baritone sitting atop the faultless playing as the group and the singer breeze through a set of relaxing but engaging compositions. ‘Dindi’ is a standout – an ebb and flow of feeling and grace, while Herbie Hancock’s ‘Maiden Voyage’ is a class personified. ‘Come Back To Me’ is a swinging groover, ‘Nature Boy’ has a good tension running throughout while ‘Lush Life’ is the most stripped back track on the set with barely more than Bearde’s accomplished vocals and piano accompaniment.
