23-year-old pianist Connie Han follows the impressive ‘Crime Zone’ from 2018 with ‘Iron Starlet’. Her playing throughout is inspired and reflects influences as wide as McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. She is joined by mentor and drummer Bill Wysaske and Jeremy Pelt adds his trumpet voice too on the track ‘Iron Starlet’, a fast driving post-Bop jazz piece. The tempo slows slightly for the atmospheric ‘Nova’ and Pelt is again in rich form. ‘Hello To, The Wind’ is a beautiful mellow tune and a highlight as is the waltz ‘Detour Ahead’ that incorporates elements of ‘My Favourite Things’. ‘Boy Toy’ is a bright jazzy piece with numerous musical twists and turns. The tempo is high on the album finale ‘Dark Chambers’. Pelt adds his full-on Freddie Hubbard like trumpet to compliment Han’s thrilling piano solo. ‘Iron Starlet’ is a fabulous set and is to date one of the Jazz albums of 2020.
