Anglo/French soul man Alexis Evans returns with a strong set that follows his 2016 album ‘Girl bait’ and this eleven-track offering is a tour de force in blue eyed northern soul and vintage rhythm and blues. The pleading ‘She Took Me Back’ introduces us to Evans’ throaty vocals while the pacey dancer ‘I Made A Deal With Myself’ is a killer mover with gospel-soul undertones. ‘Chocolate Seller’ is a chugging funker that wouldn’t be out of place in New Orleans circa ’68, the mid tempo crossover ‘How I Got Over’ is a gem while the soul drenched ‘I’ve Come A Long Way’ is a classy beat ballad with some superb touches of horns and strings with lilting backing vocals. The track of the album could possibly be the soaring ‘Your Words’ – brilliantly arranged with bubbling percussion, swirling organ and zippy horns working well with the 100% authentic R&B feel that sounds like a forgotten B-Side on a long lost obscure soul 45. Don’t miss the punchy ‘Rock ‘N Roll Healer’ at the end. Really good album.
