Compiled by jazz aficionados Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, BBE’s J Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan continues the work of celebrating the music of Japan’s rich jazz history. This latest volume continues to delve into the rich tapestry of Jazz from Japan from a period between the 1960s to the 1980s. Yasuhiro Kohno Trio + One’s crashing, energetic ‘Song Of Island’ kicks things off in powerful style, Kohsuke Mine’s “Morning Tide” is a hardcore bop number while Hideo Shiraki’s ‘Groovy Samba’ and Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphinx’s blistering jazz-funk workout “Phoebus” add to the the wide stylistic range of the album. Check Aki Takase Trio’s wonderful, cascading ‘Sing For Hope’ or the highly charged ‘1/4 Samba II’ for more inventive expressions of jazz. Shigeharu Mukai’s superb, rapid fire jazz dancer ‘Cumulonimbus’ is a stunning slab of heavy duty Jazz Fusion while Masaru Imada Trio + 1’s serene ‘Planets’ offers a respite from the bustle with a delicately brushed soundscape that comes just at the right time. The richness and diversity of Japanese jazz is here for all to see!
