Another fine release from Impulse!, Art Blakey recorded ‘Jazz Messengers!!!!’ in 1961 and ‘A Jazz Message’ in 1964. ‘Jazz Messengers!!!!’ includes driving cuts like ‘Alamode’, ‘I Hear A Rhapsody’ and ‘Circus’. The album features Jazz Messengers stalwarts, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller in the horn line-up. Unusually ‘A Jazz Message’ is a quartet date with Sonny Stitt in saxophone chair and McCoy Tyner on piano. ‘Summertime’ is the standout as is ‘Café’ with Art Davis’ deep running bass line a main feature.
