Obscure and very rare early CTI album from 1970 from trombonist J J Johnson which was only ever released in Japan. ‘Stonebone’ features George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Bob James and Grady Tate amongst others. The 14 minute opener ‘Don’tcha Hear Me Calling to ya ?’ has a slinky funky groove reminiscent of Herbie’s Fat Albert rotunda or contemporary Quincy Jones. Benson and Hancock take good solos on this and the deeper ‘Mojo’. Bob James arranged the groovy version of Joe Zawinul ‘Recollections’ . Great powerful sound on this Red Vinyl RSD limited
