Paris-based Austin, Texas born Hailey Tuck delivers a 12 track set mainly comprising contemporary and older pop covers that range from the bittersweet version of Leonard Cohen’s ‘That Don’t Make It Junk’, Bert Bern’s perkier ‘Cry To Me’ and Joni Mitchell’s spacious, drifting ‘Cactus Tree’ to Leonard Bernstein’s wistful ‘Some Other Time’. Tuck’s sugar edged voice has a clean, quirky twang that resists falling into pastiche and brings to mind her influences such as Madeleine Peyroux and Melody Gardot. The Kinks’ ‘Alcohol’ has a soft gypsy Tango feel, her own compositions ‘Last In Line’ and ‘My Chemical Life’ show her talents as a creator while Pulp’s ‘Underwear’ and McCartney’s ‘Junk’ are reimagined well. To call this pop would be missing the mark – it straddles many styles and has a songbook feel to it.
