Add(+) ‘Justments was released in 1974, the heyday of Bill Withers’ unique soul croon. After his wildly successful studio albums JUST AS I AM and STILL BILL, and the impressive live album Live At Carnegie Hall Withers got to pick his own band to back him up. He chose members of Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, a group that rose to fame in the Funk scene in the early Seventies. ‘+Justments’ is the funkiest of Bill Withers’ albums. Grooves like ‘You’ and ‘Railroad Man’ have that mid 70’s funky Soul groove. ‘The Same Love That Made Me Laugh’ was the album’s hit and a great Soul tune. And then there is the sublime 2 Stepper ‘Can We Pretend’. ‘+Justments’ is magical and possibly his best album. Or at least not far off it.
