Idiosyncratic Weldon Irvine, best known for writing to ‘Young Gifted And Black’, released a series of underground Jazz Funk albums in the seventies. ‘Liberated Brother, originally out on his own Nodlew label, was his debut in 1972. The title song is a powerful groove and ‘Juggah Buggah’ keeps the pot boiling during a second side of vinyl that cooks. Irvine’s ‘Mr Clean’ and ‘Sister Sanctified were recorded by Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Turrentine respectively for CTI and his own versions hold their own by comparison. Originally pressed in very small quantities, ‘Liberated Brother’ demands the cult status it acquired in the Jazz dance era of the 90’s.
