Rolling Stones saxophonist and keyboard player Tim Ries cut ‘Life Changes’ in 2005 back the project was canned due to personal reasons. The cat of players reads like a who’s who with Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell, Larry Goldings, Grégoire Maret, James Genus and Scott Colley joining Ries on this twelve-track offering. At nearly 8 minutes long the title track ‘Life Changes’ is given the space for each musician to come to the fore, the even longer ‘Monk’s Dream’ clocks in at nearly 13 minutes and has a Prestige vibe with it’s finger clicking strut, cooking Hammond and guitar picking out a whimsical melody while the freer ‘Hearing Around Corners’ feels around for direction before the band turn up the pace and journey through bop, fusion and improv. Ries’ daughter Jasia graces the mellow ‘Bella’s Lullaby’ while the standout track is possibly ‘Late Last Night’, another 7 minute plus odyssey that yawns into life with a gentle, spiritual opening before kicking into an intense hard bop workout.
