Dexter Wansel’s Life On MarsWhat The World Is Coming ToVoyager Time Is Slipping Away have been made avaiable on 2CDs from the BGO label. The CD package highlights some of the best output from the talented arranger, writer, musician and performer’s four albums for Philadelphia International Records, dating from 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979. Wansel started off in music as a keyboardist and synth player for some of the Philadelphia studio bands, such as MFSB and Instant Funk, while also getting gigs with the likes of Archie Bell and the Drells and Don Covay. The musical body of Wansel’s work consists of space-age jazz funk grooves, mixed with symphonic soul and bouncy disco cuts. Highlights include the astral jazz-funk of Theme From The Planets, the romping Life On Mars, the sultry two-step of The Sweetest Pain and the swinging disco of I’ll Never Forget My Favourite Disco. Wansel’s sound is totally unique, the jazzier edge of Philadelphia International Records, which took on a form similar to Gamble and Huff productions but featured more experimental instrumentation and synthesis, while still carrying that characteristic Sigma Sound signature. Broad strokes of jazz funk, painted over the canvas of the Philly sound.
