Live At The Hopbine 1968 Vol 1 – The Syndicate

A quartet live session featuring drum/bass/ guitar/ tenor sax, this Tubby Hayes recording shows Britain’s finest reeds man in fine fettle. Four pieces, three lengthy such as the fiery ‘The Syndicate’ and the equally pacey Jimmy Heath tune ‘Gingerbread Boy’ famously covered by Miles around this time. ‘Gearbox’ is another fast number whereas Luis Bonfa’s ‘Gentle Rain’ allows the musicians and listeners to draw breath. ‘Th Syndicate’ shows that Tubby had been influenced by the likes of Coltrane and Ornette Coleman in that the tracks are considerably freer than his early 60’s work.
