13th solo album from the legend Mavis Staples, ‘Livin’ On A High Note’ see her team up with an eclectic group of writers to produce a varied set with a real sense of atmosphere. The southern influence comes through both in Staples aged vocals and in the music, especially on ‘Take Us Back’, ‘High Note’ and ‘Tomorrow’. ‘MLK Song’ brings to mind the feel of the very earliest Staples Singers music – that blend of folky soul and gospel – while ‘History Now’ tackles current issues besetting America today. ‘Action’ is a good groover while ‘Dedicated’ a delicate, sparse ballad.
