Second studio album from this strong voiced UK singer/songwriter ‘Love & Hate’ has distinct Withers/Callier influences but manages to stand aside from those and deliver a forceful and engaging tour de force that has won him critical acclaim. The epic, cinematic ‘Cold Little Heart’ emerges from a lengthy orchestrated opening and fuses funk, folk and a progressive feel to immense effect – think the more expansive rock feel of Pink Floyd fusing with a grand folk-soul soundscape and you’re somewhere close. The hypnotic repetitions of the work-song like ‘Black Man In A White World’ thumps home the socio-political message while the title track feels like a twin of the aforementioned ‘Cold Little Heart’ and again marries an impassioned vocal delivery with strings and a hard edge, funk beat. ‘One More Night’ has blues undercurrents on a great, uptempo and infectious groove. ‘Rule The World’ is perhaps the most Callier-esq tune on the album while ‘The Final Frame’ is beautiful ender that works with the tension between the hard blues guitar and the sweeping orchestration. Special kind of record.
