Harvey Scales is best known for writing Johnnie Taylor’s massive 1976 hit ‘Disco Lady’ in fact he wrote over a hundred songs in his career. He recorded many great Soul and Funk 45s for the Magic Touch label between 1967 and 1977 with his group The Seven Sounds, which are compiled here.
‘Get Down’ and ‘Love-itis’ from 1967 are typical raw southern soul funky goodtime dancers of their time which could easily have been recorded by Wilson Pickett. ‘Broadway Freeze’ , ‘The Yolk’, ‘Funky Football’ and the slightly slower ‘I Can’t cry no more’ show a James Brown influence. The instrumental ‘The Sound Of Soul’ and ‘To Be True’ are uptempo stompers that could be played on the Northern Soul scene, and there are good ballads ‘Don’t Let It Ever End’ and ‘Welcome’.
All of these tracks come from the 67-70 period. He then recorded in 1975 his in demand urgent modern Soul funky dancer ‘Trying To Survive’ , and more laid back funk ‘Groove On Sexy Lady’. This set ends with

‘Love Thief’ a funky disco number from ’77.
Good funky soul from the classic period from one of our lesser known but prolific singers.
