Manchester based six-piece Pieces Of A Man drop their debut album in the form of ‘Made In Pieces’ with a band name obviously paying homage to Gil Scott-Heron. Their multi-styled outlook and broad influences helps to create an engaging listen – the warm, LA feel of ‘Easier’ has a Sly Stone vibe, ‘Listen’ draws on mid-70s Stevie influences while the bumping groove of ‘Nothing To Lose’ is a lazy head nodder that has gospel touches. The funky ‘Grits’ rides on an infectious rhythm with afro-funk feels, they cover Gil’s ‘Lady Day & John Coltrane’ with inventiveness while the soaring ‘Running’ is irresistible. Really good album, mainly mid tempo, slow burners that grow with each listen.
